gina kim

thrillingly talented in the arts of industrial design, gina kim is a woman who "wood" sacrifice her met points to help a poor and starving korean boy.  she likes to boogie down like a trance diva--ask her for some of her best dance routines--and is sometimes way too critical of her own work.  come explore the wonderful world of anti-priss artistry.  presenting gina kim!

interview with the geno
friday, may 31, 2002, 730 post | geno in blue, gina in grey
gina's dorm room at the rhode island school of design.  providence, ri.

gina, why is it raining right now in providence?
the weather is being sad for me.  and it's really humid and icky outside.

what makes such an occassion sad?
i'm going home in like... [checkes watch] half an hour.

so how does it feel to go home and be done with sophomore year?
i've conquered the unconquerable.  [giggles, and giggles more as she looks at a digital picture grace took.]  i learned so----o much.  eugene, if you ever need a table, give me a call.  i'll make you a nice table.

and you make tables because...?
because the table saw is my bitch, and i can--oh--i don't have to make just tables.  i can make, like, anything.

so what do you have planned for home?
um...  right...  like immediately?  like, right when i get home?

no, for the summer.
o
h, i'm going to arizona.  i'm going to draw again...  for missions again, like i did last summer.  and hopefully i'll get to draw like a did last summer...  and bust out some cool stuff.  like my old pastor gave me a personal mission and he wants me to draw god.  how am i supposed to do that?  [pauses.]  do you think i can do that?

gina, you can do whatever you put your heart to.  [laughs.]
[picks up the phone and talks to her mother in korean.]

so, if you could describe yourself in three words, what would they be and why?
three?  that's a hard one.  [thinks, then whisper-laughs.]  misunderstood.  because i am misunderstood...  just first impression wise.  um...  [thinks, and shifts feet.]  mm...  okay!  i'm friendly.  one more word?  [pauses.]  wait, so it was misunderstood, friendly, and...  can it be more than three words?  [geno refuses.]  mm...  misunderstood, friendly, and...   i could be crazy sometimes.

like crazy-cool or crazy-popular or crazy-annoying or crazy/beautiful?
[laughs.]  have you ever seen that movie?  i went to go watch it with my friend back at home and like, the main character in the morning--she was really artsy and she was into photography and i was like, "i want to be just like her."  and then my friend was like, "omigosh, jay hernandez is SO HOT."  but that doesn't answer your question.  crazy...  crazy-weird.

ha ha.  crazy-weird.  sounds good to me.  so for all the eligible bachelors out there reading your interview, how would you like to put yourself out on the market?
do i have to answer that?  could you change the question?...  i'm not the type of girl that most guys would want anyway.

aw, why would you say that?  haven't you had your share of boytoys?
boytoys?  boys are horribly evil.  [geno grumbles.]  they don't know a good thing when it's right in front of them.  that's how stupid they are.

so then why don't you just date girls?
[laughs.]  if i could, i would...  but i can't, so there.  [continues to laugh.]  i don't know sometimes...  i think about, and i think that i would make a better guy than a girl...  in certain aspects.  'cause if you think about it, i'm not the girliest girl...  are you done?  um, and um, my relatives said that my brother and i should change places because he was all into shopping and getting himself to look good, and i just wouldn't give a damn.

your brother!  tell us about your brother!
mm...  he's a senior in high school;  he should be going to prom tonight but he's not and he has his reasons.  mm...  he's uh...  i didn't think he could articulate his thoughts until this year.  and--sadly--i underestimated him, and i shouldn't have.  he says we have a really good relationship--um--and i guess i could agree with that now because he tells me a lot of stuff and i guess we look out for each other a lot more than we used to...  than we should have before...  but that's because he grew up, and that's a good thing.

that's cool.  it's always nice to connect with siblings.  i think it's hard for me since my sister is nine years older.  but anyway.  as we're nearing the end of this interview, lets get to some gritty questions.  what is your goal in life?
what is my goal in life?  to...  [thinks.]  to get a nice job, learn as much about myself as possible...  no, learn to be a better person...  um...  maybe somewhere down the road i'll get married and have kids...  live out the ultimate american dream.  [laughs.]  my dad is living out the ultimate american dream!  what's there for me then?

what are you passionate about?
that's a very good question.  [thinks hard.]  gosh, what am i passionate about?  [sighs.]  um...  [thinks profusely.]  people.  but not just anybody...  the people i connect with...  ooh.  i'll do nice things for them.  i'm passionate about...  my work...  uh...  my major...  because i get to do everything...  i don't know.  a lot of different things drive me.  what do you think?

i think you are passionate about your work, definitely.  industrial design seems right up your alley.  i can recall pretty vividly times when we'd walk and you'd see some lamp in some random building and say, "that lamp is so nice.  i want a lamp like that.  i want to make that lamp."
no, you know what i do?  like...  if i see something i like...  i always say, "i can make that."  you know what i did?  i think i just told grace.  i don't know if you were listening...  but that head massge thingie at the mall...  it's called the octopus...  like, it was so---o nice.  and, um, i picked one up and i studied it carefully, and i took approximate measurements in my head...  took mental notes...  and then, when we got home, i made a ghetto one...  like a bootleg one.  it doesn't work as well but pretty good...  it's a bootleg.  not too shabby.  but that was the first time that i said i could make it and actually made it.  so...

nice.  well, as we close up this interview, do you have any last words?
what kind of words?  what do you want me to say?  like, specifically.

just anything.  like, something you might close a letter with.  or some words of advice.  or some closing thoughts on the year.  or some teasers about what's to come.  anything.
i'll leave with a tiny bit of advice...  always strive to be a better person and don't think that the person that you were is a perfect image of yourself because you're always changing and you're always making the conscious effort to become a better person.
